Learning to freestyle rap is like teaching  yourself to speak in poetry, you want all your words to rhyme and have meaning. Some people say it’s just hip-hop that’s compared to poetry, which  used to be correct, but not in this age. Freestyle battles have become part of our culture today. It’s this theory that we are using to give you some freestyle rap tips to better assist you on your poetic journey.

Freestyle rapping is spitting lyrics cipher-style (or by themself ) that you make up on the spot. We are living in an age where people dont spit  kindergarten flows anymore, so the best beginners advice anyone can offer is to buy a dictionary first.  Reading the dictionary can give you a proper vocabulary and assist in giving intelligence to your freestyle sessions.

Now how to start rhyming, this is easy. We started learning to rhyme before we started school, think the little rhymes your mommy used to tell you when you were a baby. Rhyming words is easy, finding words that rhyme gets tough. Freestyle rap doesnt have to sound smart all the time, when you are just beginning try continuously rhyming. It’s going to sound stupid and your going to mess up, but just keep doing it. Use words of things you see and try to rhyme everything around you.

I tell you how to rap, you tell me what is that? I say you talk too slow, you say Already know.

Just keep doing it, practice it every day, a new rap, aloud or in your head you’ll get  it. Sometimes you’ll get stuck on the same phrase, that’s when you grab a random sentence that doesnt have to rhyme and throw it in like- Pump up the volume or I grab the microphone. Something random, freestyles can be about anything. When Eminem freestyles he disses himself and other people, then still finds time to talk about some random stuff. Just make sure you dont diss yourself the whole time, that cant be too fresh.

Learn to rhyme ahead of time. So as soon as you’ve finished one line think of your ending for the next one. It’s always good to find something that’s related too or else you might lose the audience that’s following your point. If you cant think of anything just talk about something they are wearing or doing, to keep your flow going.

Grab the microphone and abolish, if  you’ve come to step to me, you want knowledge.

Take some time out of every day to write some rap lyrics, this will help you gain your poetic abilities. All freestylists are poets and it’s the poetry that we write every day that shows up in our rhymes. Write about current events, politics, things you see happen on a day to day basic, your work, your family, let it all out- but in rhymes of course.

Find a friend who is gettin down with freestyle rapping, this is a great practice technique. Both of you can go head to head to practice battling before doing it for real. When you are learning to do this, it’s best to remember statements the other person says so you can find a way to bring them back up and use them kinda in defense.When going through a freestyle battle  think competition. Your being judged, more than sometimes unfairly. Underground hip-hop battles happen at hip hop clubs, they announce competitions, there’s even recorded battles online that help you practice rapping.
